Eyebrow Tattoo Basics and Aftercare
What is an eyebrow tattoo?
Eyebrow tattooing is a cosmetic procedure where pigment is implanted into the skin using a specialised technique to create the appearance of fuller, more defined eyebrows.
This process can be a great solution for those with sparse, over-plucked, or uneven eyebrows. Cosmetic tattoo eyebrows can look natural, and the results can last for several years, depending on factors like skin type and lifestyle.
How to get eyebrows tattooed? Only by a highly skilled cosmetic artist. Go with a well reviewed, highly recommended cosmetic studio to help ensure you are happy with the end result; your brows aren’t something you want to leave to chance!

How long does eyebrow tattoo last?
Are eyebrow tattoos permanent? No. In general, you can expect the results to last up to two years.
The longevity of your eyebrow tattooing will depend on a few factors. Did you know your skin type can impact how long your eyebrow tattoos last? If you have oily skin, which is prone to excessive sebum production, a cosmetic eyebrow tattoo may not last as long compared to a dry skin type.
Lifestyle factors and skincare also play a role. For example, spending a lot of time outdoors in the sun and using high concentrations of active ingredients in your skin care products can speed up how quickly your brows fade. Touch-ups may be required to maintain the desired look and we recommend our clients to come back for a refresh every 10-12 months to maintain the colour.
Consider your face shape and skin tone
Eyebrow tattooing is highly customised to suit each client’s preferred eyebrow shape, skin tone, and hair colour. Before undergoing feathering or microblading procedures, your cosmetic tattoo artist will work with you to find a brow shape that perfectly complements your facial structure.
Here are some prevalent facial shapes paired with suitable eyebrow styles:
- A compact square face may appear elongated with arched eyebrows
- Wider-set eyes and broader nose bridges can be enhanced by close-set brows
- Fuller faces can be balanced by thick brows, creating the illusion of a smaller face
- Gentle, rounded faces can gain definition with angular eyebrows
The tone of your skin and colour of your hair play a crucial role in selecting the right shade for your brows. There are a range of pigment colours available and usually a colour slightly darker than the hair will frame the face and draw attention to the eye area.
Eyebrow tattoo healing: What to expect
There are distinct stages of eyebrow tattoo healing and the importance of aftercare in phase can’t be overstated. In general, here are the common things to expect as your permanent makeup heals and then stabilises.
- Tenderness in the area
- Pink or redness around the affected area
- Swelling
- Thickening and darkening of the eyebrow area
- Moderate to thick scabbing 3-4 days following the procedure
- Between days 5 - 10 post procedure the scabs will begin to flake off
- After scabs flake off, pigment colour and strokes will look light, grey, and blurry
- After area is fully healed (4 weeks after procedure) the pigment will return to full colour
Everyone heals differently and the above eyebrow tattoo healing stages should be used as a guide only. Individual skin tones and ability to absorb pigment can vary greatly.
Does eyebrow tattooing hurt?
The level of discomfort experienced during eyebrow tattooing can vary from person to person. A topical anaesthetic is used to numb the area, which can help minimise any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Eyebrow tattoo aftercare
How you take care of your eyebrow tattoos in the short term will have a huge impact on how quickly they heal. In the long term, the right aftercare can prolong the longevity of your luscious looking brows.
Immediate post procedure: Blot the skin
Immediately following the procedure gently blot the area with a clean tissue to absorb excess lymph fluid. Do this every 5 minutes for 30 minutes until the oozing has stopped. Removing this fluid prevents the hardening of the lymphatic fluids.
Days 1 - 7 post procedure: Aftercare ointment
Our team will provide you with aftercare ointment which should be applied in the week following the treatment.
Use a cotton swab to apply a small, rice grain-sized amount of the aftercare ointment to the treated area. Avoid applying too much, as this may hinder your skin's ability to breathe and slow the healing process. The ointment should be barely visible on the skin. Always ensure the tattoo is neither wet nor damp before applying the ointment.
You’ll also need to avoid sweating and getting water on your brows; keep them totally dry in the week following the treatment.
Other tips eyebrow tattoo aftercare:
- Avoid direct sunlight for 4 weeks after the procedure; always wear a hat outdoors
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase.
- Allow scabs or dry skin to exfoliate naturally. Picking may lead to scarring or colour loss.
- Refrain from facials, Botox, chemical treatments, or microdermabrasion for four weeks.
- Steer clear of hot, strenuous exercise for one week.
- For the initial ten days, avoid extended hot showers.
- For the first ten days, don't sleep with your face down.
- For the initial ten days, stay away from face-down swimming, lakes, and hot tubs.
- Do not apply makeup or sunscreen to the area.
- Refrain from rubbing, picking, or scratching the treated area.
- Keep showers to 5 minutes to minimise steam, and keep your face/procedure area away from the water while washing your body.
Long-term care and maintenance
Maintaining your brows best appearance for as long as possible is highly dependent on your commitment to long-term aftercare. As we mentioned, keeping your face protected from the sun and avoiding the use of skincare with a high concentration of active ingredients on the brow area can help prolong the life of your brows.

Different Eyebrow Tattoo Techniques and Styles
Understanding the differences between the eyebrow tattoo techniques, like a feather tattoo eyebrows and powder eyebrow tattoos will help you find the best option for your ultimate brows.
Eyebrow Tattoo vs Microblading
Microblading is a type of cosmetic eyebrow tattoo, but it differs from traditional tattooing in a few key ways.
Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow tattoo technique using a handheld tool with fine needles to create hair-like strokes that mimic your natural eyebrow hairs, whereas traditional brow tattooing uses a machine.
On the other hand, the process of getting your eyebrows tattooed to fill them out is done with a tattoo machine; meaning needles penetrate the skin and inject the ink.
Also, microblading involves inserting pigment into the skin in a more superficial manner, which means that the effects don't last as long as traditional tattoos.
However, microblading can create a more natural-looking eyebrow by mimicking the look of individual hairs. This is achieved by using a fine blade to make small, hair-like strokes in the skin and then filling in the strokes with pigment.
The microblading technique is used in our salon to create various brow styles including Micro-feather Brows and our TBC Signature Combination brows.
Micro-Feather Tattoo Eyebrows
Feather tattoo eyebrows are a style created by the microblading technique that offers a natural, feathery appearance by using fine strokes to mimic individual eyebrow hairs. The feathering technique is perfect for those who want to enhance their eyebrows' shape and fullness without going for a bold, solid look.
TBC Signature Combination Brows
With this type of brow, we blend the microblading eyebrow tattoo technique with the powder eyebrow tattoo - more on that in a moment.
The inner brow gets a feather stroke eyebrow tattoo that includes hair strokes, while the tails are powdered to achieve the perfect definition. The result is a fantastic compromise between a hair stroke and powder-filled effect that achieves a beautifully natural yet defined brow.
Hair strokes are also added around the outer line of the arch to soften the powdered tails.
Is microblading for you?
Microblading is a fantastic option if you are;
- Desiring natural-looking and voluminous eyebrows
- Dealing with sparse and uneven brows
- Experiencing hair loss issues
- Seeking a gentle enhancement of your brow shape
- Wanting the wake-up-and-go look with no brow makeup required
Powder Eyebrow Tattoo
If you love that makeup-like appearance for your eyebrows, the powder eyebrow tattoo technique could be the best option for you.
Also known as ombre or powder brows, this method uses a specialised tool to create a soft, powdery, and gradient effect on the eyebrows. It's ideal for those who like a more filled-in look. Powder eyebrow tattoos can last for several years, depending on factors like skin type and lifestyle.
Are powder brows for you?
Powder brows are a great choice if;
- You’d like a more natural appearance or lush, full brows
- Your skin is oily or acne-prone
- You’d love to enhance the definition and hue of your eyebrows
- You like the "powder-filled brows" aesthetic
