Aftercare microblading do's

Apply your aftercare ointment for 7 days

After your procedure with Tanya Beauty Care, we'll give you a post-treatment ointment to apply to your brow area for 1 week post-procedure. 

Stay out of the sun 

Wear a hat and stay out of direct sunlight for 4 weeks post procedure. Even after 4 weeks, we suggest staying sunsafe outdoors to prolong the life of your brows. 

Use a clean pillowcase

Change your pillowcase daily for the first 10 days and don't sleep with your face down.

Keep your face dry

Keep showers to 5 minutes to minimise steam, and keep your face/procedure area away from the water while washing your body. 

Aftercare microblading don'ts

Pick at scabs

You'll experience scabbing during day 5 -7 post-procedure, this is completely normal. The important thing to remember is to allow scabs to exfoliate and fall off naturally as picking can lead to scarring or colour loss. Don't pick, rub or scratch the treated area.

Get facial treatments

Steer clear of chemical peels, microdermabrasion, botox or facials for 4 weeks after the procedure. 

Get sweaty or swim

Avoid sweaty, strenuous exercise for 1 week stay away from face-down swimming, lakes, and hot tubs.

Microblading eyebrows aftercare FAQs

When can I wash my face after microblading?

Wait at least 7 days before washing your eyebrow area when you cleanse your face after microblading. After this time, you can gently wash your eyebrow area with a mild cleanser.

Can I get my eyebrows wet after microblading?

No. Avoid getting your eyebrows wet for at least 7 days after microblading. 

Can I put bepanthen on my microbladed eyebrows?

No. We recommend using the post-treatment ointment. 

**This point needs clarification / input from the client. I'm not sure if Skin Tattoo Cream - available in the store - is also the post-treatment ointment or it is a different cream. BePANTHEN is an antiseptic cream - so I'm not sure if the post-treatment ointment has antiseptic properties to be used (rather than a commercial cream) - Skin Tattoo Cream doesn't have antiseptic properties according to the description.  

Can I tint my eyebrows after microblading

Yes but you'll need to wait for at least 4-6 weeks after microblading (or until the area is fully healed) to tint your eyebrows.

How long does microblading last?

Everyone has a different pain threshold, so some people may experience more discomfort than others even with the numbing cream. Overall, most people will find any pain associated with microblading tolerable. 

Does microblading damage your eyebrows?

The procedure does not damage your natural eyebrow hair or cause hair loss. However, if not done correctly, microblading can lead to scarring or pigment migration. Taking a risk and choosing an inexperienced technician or poorly-reviewed brow salon can leave you with unattractive, uneven brows. Days 1 - 7 post procedure: Aftercare ointment

Our team will provide you with aftercare ointment which should be applied in the week following the treatment.

Use a cotton swab to apply a small, rice grain-sized amount of the aftercare ointment to the treated area. Avoid applying too much, as this may hinder your skin's ability to breathe and slow the healing process. The ointment should be barely visible on the skin. Always ensure the tattoo is neither wet nor damp before applying the ointment.

You’ll also need to avoid sweating and getting water on your brows; keep them totally dry in the week following the treatment.

What Is A Cosmetic Tattoo?

A cosmetic tattoo is similar in many ways to traditional tattoos in that they both involve the placement of ink under the skin. 

Unlike regular tattooing, however, cosmetic tattoos are only semi-permanent. Where tattoos are placed deep in the skin below the dermis, cosmetic tattoos sit between the dermis and the upper layer of skin, the epidermis. 

Primarily used on the face, cosmetic tattoos can be used to apply eyeliner, enhance lip colour and create fuller eyebrows. The latter of which we will be focusing on in this guide. 

Types Of Cosmetic Eyebrow Tattoos

While eyebrow tattooing is now mostly synonymous with microblading there are actually a few different methods for tattooing eyebrows (types). These include: 

Microblading/Feathering

This tattooing technique involves using a small handheld microblading tool to create natural-looking hair strokes.  

Drawn in the direction of your brow's existing hair growth and added in layers, this method delivers incredibly realistic and natural results.

Microshading/Mist Brow

Also applied using a small handheld tool, microshading involves placing hundreds of very small, pin-like dots within the brow area.

Ombre Brow

Depending on where you have had your tattooing performed, you should be provided with aftercare instructions and either a cream or ointment to apply in the following weeks that will aid in healing. 

The most important aftercare tips for cosmetic tattoo eyebrows include the following:

• Your eyebrows must not get wet for at least 10 to 15 days post-tattooing. This includes sweat, rain and keeping them out of the water in the shower.
• No make-up or lotions other than the provided aftercare cream should be applied anywhere near the eyebrow area
• You should avoid touching or wiping your eyebrows 
• Sun exposure should be limited 

Why Is Aftercare So Important? 

Your eyebrow tattoos are essentially open wounds until healed. Adhering to the aftercare instructions limits the risk of infections during the healing process while also facilitating better outcomes.  

Improper aftercare can cause your tattoos to become infected, fade or become distorted. Not only does this leave you with a poor result that will need corrective work, but it can make for an unnecessarily painful and longer recovery overall. 

Healing Stages Of Cosmetic Eyebrow Tattoos

The following is a rough timeline intended to help you identify the various healing stages after having a cosmetic tattoo on your eyebrows.  

Keep in mind that every individual will heal differently. Factors such as age, overall health, skin type and more will all influence your healing journey. 

Days 1 - 4

Immediately after having your eyebrows tattooed, the area will be quite red and may appear a little swollen. This usually subsides in a matter of hours, please refrain from icing your brows to speed up this process as this may cause them to get wet. 

The intensity of the ink will also be quite pronounced, typically it is around 70% darker at this time than when fully healed. 

We understand that due to this, your first glimpse of your brows can be a little confronting and may cause you to have feelings of panic. Rest assured that so long as you care for them, they will heal to a beautiful result. 

Days 5 - 10 

Between day five and ten post-tattooing, you should expect your eyebrows to start scabbing and flaking. This is all perfectly normal and indicates the brows are beginning to heal. 

It is important not to pick, scratch or rub at your eyebrows during this time. Using the provided aftercare lotion can help ease any itching or discomfort at this stage. 

Days 8 - 11

At around day eight, you may be alarmed to see that the colour which was initially very bold has begun to fade right back. In some cases, it may appear that the ink has disappeared completely. 

Once again, this is normal and no cause for panic, the colour will begin to reappear as the healing continues. 

At this point in healing, you may get your eyebrows wet, but should still avoid rubbing at them or using any soaps or face wash. They should be gently patted dry with a clean cloth post-showering. 

Days 11 - 41

This last but often quite long stage should see your brows free of scabbing or flaking and the colour reemerge. 

The tattoo may also look spotty or uneven during this time. While the majority of the tattoo should settle by the end of this period, a follow-up visit to your technician is necessary.

During this visit, following the complete healing of the initial procedure at between 6 to 8 weeks, touch-ups or tweaks can be made to correct any concerns over shape or colour saturation. 

While this step is usually less intensive than the initial tattooing, the same aftercare guidelines and timelines for healing apply. 

Things To Avoid During The Healing Process

Wondering what else to avoid during the healing stages of cosmetic tattoos for eyebrows? Aside from the aftercare tips provided above, within the first 14 days we also suggest you avoid the following:

• Smoking or consuming an excess of alcohol, as this can slow healing
• Driving or riding in open-air vehicles as airborne debris and the force of the wind on your face may irritate the already sensitive area 
• Wearing any full-face helmets, hats or beanies that come into contact with the eyebrow region
• Saunas and any exercise that will induce sweating
• Sunbaking or tanning as during healing the pigment is more vulnerable to fading from UV/UVA rays
• Picking, peeling or scratching, no matter how tempting, as this can lift the pigment from the skin
• Having any facials, botox, fillers or peels 
• Applying any disinfectant or alcohol-based antibacterial products as these will dry out the area 

Are There Ways To Speed Up Healing?

While there are no proven methods for expediting the healing process there are ways in which you can support your body to help this along. Here are some extra things to do during the healing stages after having cosmetic tattoos on your eyebrows.

As well as following all aftercare advice and the above situations, it is recommended to drink plenty of water and to consistently apply the provided aftercare lotion. 

The reason for this is that hydrated skin is known to heal and rejuvenate itself more quickly. 

Getting plenty of sleep can also aid in faster healing as during sleep our muscles, including those in our face experience an increase in blood flow. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to injured areas which helps cells to regenerate. 

When To Seek Help

Occasionally, complications can occur during the healing process. If you experience ongoing pain, tenderness, fever, green or yellow discharge or similar, these are all signs that your healing cosmetically tattooed eyebrows need additional aftercare.

What Is Microblading Exactly? 

Microblading is a type of cosmetic tattoo used to enhance the appearance of the eyebrows. It can be used to correct concerns over eyebrow shape while also giving the illusion of fuller brows. 

Previous methods for tattooing eyebrows involved depositing ink deeply into the skin for a permanent, usually very heavy-looking result. 

Microblading, by comparison, offers a natural-looking, semi-permanent alternative in which ink is gently feathered into the brows just below the epidermis. This is done using a specialist tool made up of several tiny needles. 

Microblading – What To Expect From Start To Finish

There are many different stages of eyebrow microblading, the actual microblading itself is one of the most brief parts of the entire process. 

If you’re curious to know what the different stages of eyebrow microblading involve, the following information should answer any queries you may have. 

Consultation 

One of the first and most important steps of eyebrow microblading is the initial consultation. 

During this consultation, our experts take a look at your natural eyebrow shape to help determine where they need to be tattooed for optimal fullness. 

Even if you have very sparse brows or non-existent brows, we will still look at your brow area to get an idea of what is going to work best for you. 

It is important that you attend this consultation with clean brows free of any pencil, tint or waxes used to hold them in place. This ensures we are seeing your brows in their natural state and we have a clear picture of what we are working with. 

At this stage, we will often take some before photos so you can compare the results once the process is complete.  

Measuring

If you’re comfortable going ahead following the initial consultation, the next step is to measure out and mark the position of your new brows. 

This step is done with utmost care and attention as it determines how even your brows will be. Using rulers and/or callipers we perform a series of measurements to perfectly place your eyebrows in the most natural position.

At this time, we will also discuss with you your preferred look in terms of brow shape, if you’re unsure we can help guide you based on what we feel will suit your face. 

Our goal is to see you with brows that perfectly complement your face while also meeting your personal preferences. 

Review

Once the shape and finish of your brows have been agreed upon, we will pencil in your eyebrows to give you a chance to review your decision. 

Keep in mind that this step is not intended to represent the final look. The colour of the pencil is likely to be wrong and the solid shading is nothing like the feathering done during microblading. 

Pencilling in is all about checking the shape and positioning before the tattooing begins. Remember, once your brows are done, you’ll be living with them for a few years at least unless you opt for laser removal. 

Make sure you are 100% happy with this and speak up if not, we promise we don’t mind making adjustments, we take pride in our work and want you to love your brows! 

Colour Mixing  

When selecting a colour for your eyebrows, we suggest opting for one that best matches your skin's natural undertones. You can opt for a darker shade or lighter depending on your desired look. 

We are also able to custom-mix colours as needed for the best fit and may paint a small amount onto your skin to check its suitability before getting started. 

Tattooing

If you’ve never had a tattoo, cosmetic or otherwise, this next step can be a little daunting. While microblading is not pain-free, most of our clients are pleasantly surprised to find that it just feels like a series of small scratches. 

Usually, the body quickly adjusts to this feeling and it becomes easier to relax into the session. On occasion, you may feel like you need to sneeze or experience watery eyes or a runny nose during the tattooing, this is also totally normal. If at any time you need to take a short break, just let us know.

Your brows will be tattooed on in layers to gradually build up the shape and colour using tiny hair-like strokes. In terms of time, you should expect it to take between two to three hours from consultation to the finishing of the tattoo stage.

Immediately after your brows are finished the area is going to look quite red and may feel a little tender or swollen. This usually dissipates quite quickly within a matter of hours. 

The colour of your brow tattoo will also appear much darker (up to 70% darker) initially compared to where they will end up when fully healed. 

Pain Management

If you are very concerned about possible discomfort, we recommend taking some paracetamol an hour or so before your appointment. Anaesthetic creams are advised against as they soften the skin and prohibit the ink from taking properly.

Healing 

Easily the longest stage, full healing of your newly microbladed brows can take upwards of a month. The exact timeline will vary based on a few factors such as age, skin type and the health of the individual. 

Clear instructions on aftercare will be provided including the provision of a cream that aids in healing. 

For the first two weeks, you must keep your brows completely dry. This means no exercise that induces sweating and keeping your face dry during a shower. No make-up should be worn in the first week either. 

Just as with any tattoo, the treated skin is an open wound, so keeping the area clean and dry is the best way to avoid potential infections. 

During the first week, you may experience some itching or peeling and it may appear that your brows are fading significantly. All of this is expected during the healing process and we promise it will all settle, even the colour – just try not to touch or pick at them as this can impact the results. 

If at any stage you have concerns over how your brows are healing or experience unexpected swelling or redness please let us know so we can best advise you on the next steps. 

Touch Ups

Between 6 to 8 weeks following your initial session and once all healing is complete, a second session of microblading is required. This session allows you to tweak your results and ensures the best possible final look. 

The healing process and aftercare are the same following these touch-ups so be prepared to be patient a little while longer. We promise it’s worth it!

Maintaining Your Microbladed Brows

Once done and healed, your newly microbladed eyebrows can remain looking great for anywhere between 18 months to 2.5 years before needing to be redone. 

How long your brows will last is often down to how well you care for them. While they are semi-permanent and designed to fade over time, you can help them retain their colour by:

• Always applying sunscreen with a high SPF before heading outdoors
• Wearing a hat or visor to protect them when in the sun 
• Avoiding the use of skincare near your brows that contain retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid or vitamin C as they can be detrimental to the integrity of the pigment 
• Being gentle when shaping your eyebrows or using make-up on them as this protects the underlying skin 

Is Microblading Safe For Everyone? 

Microblading is safe for most people to undergo, however, we do ask that you let us know:

• If you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to hair dye
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• If you are currently taking thyroid medication or blood thinners
• If you are receiving treatment for skin concerns and taking Accutane or steroids
• If you have diabetes
• If you have previously had Botox or fillers in the brow area 
• If you are prone to keloid scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
• If you are undergoing chemotherapy
